In May and June 2002 Brian was working in Kabul, Afghanistan on a project to promote THE LOYA JIRGA, Afghanistans transitional government. After many years of war Afghanistan is taking its first steps towards DEMOCRACY.
In July 2001 and April 2002 Brian was working in BOTSWANA helping to start an AIDS educational radio drama.
In May and June 2001 Brian worked in Cape Town in WONDERFUL SOUTH AFRICA making information programmes about work related issues.
In 1999, 2000, and 2001 Brian spent many months in KOSOVO helping to run youth information programmes aimed at both Albanian and Serb young people. Brian also helped to run a weekly ROADSHOW to help publicise the Kosovo Elections.
Brian will soon also build a studio in TAJIKESTAN.
This is where Brian began his career in radio. an ILLEGAL "Pirate" radio station RADIO CAROLINE broadcasting from a ship off the coast of Holland. Brian was there in 1973 and 1974.
I have always thought that the Dong Fang Radio building in Shanghai is INCREDIBLY ugly. To me it looks like a giant shampoo bottle. The design is also illogical with vast areas of wasted space. It is a waste of money but around a million dollars of its cost was paid by ME.
This is a little radio station in a SERB enclave in Kosovo. Serb enclaves are very interesting. They are small villages filled with SERBS. All around are ALBANIANS and the people in the enclaves cannot get out easily.... it is too dangerous.
Radio Afghanistan...... A scruffy, sad and depressing place. Like many radio stations in China, Vietnam. Mongolia, Serbia and other ex communist places it was designed by the Russians.
Afghanistan...... A sad and desperately poor country destroyed by the Russians and more recently by the Americans. but MOST of the destruction they did to themselves through years of insane civil war. But........ most of the people are AMAZINGLY friendly.
