i'd been listening to the programme since i was a middle school student, and i'm in the university now.
i still can feel the great happiness i felt that time when maggie read my letter~ still remember the loverly cat PiGu~
and the little little studio where you were recording HFB...
as years go by, i can't find u from 101.7. what i had to do was only to get used to it. and i am now.
but i've just see the letter which brain write in 2001 from a bbs where have lots of fans of HFB, that really makes me feel shocked and angry!~!!
how are you brian? i learnt from the website that u had an operation last year, so you are all right now, right? you are one of the most important dj to me and some of my friends, and more than that, one dj once said that you were one important person to shanghai east radio in changing the style of the djs. so, you see, we really really , won't forget you. and i long for listening to ur voice so much, also it seems like a far far away dream...
and, what about maggie?
your interesting voice was once the topic of my friends and i...
i write this, just because i what u to know, in shanghai, there are stil lots of fans like me who will think of you two and HFB sometime.
...
best wishes

I am a Chinese student at University of Tokyo,Japan,I still love your radio programm since 1993,while I was working at shanghai for several months.
It is the time for me to decide whether I should go back to China, esp., to work,or stay in Japan,This news hurt me deeply that my country is still not a grown up nation with good rules.Althought I always express my proud of Shanghai' economic miracals and internationalization,in face of so severe japanese prejedis.
The GDP per capita of Shanghai ,is about $4800 this year, and 14 percent annuale economic growth rate, why most of the goverment officals still act an way of underdevelopement tribes leaders, all thought the economic ranking of shanhai, may be among the emerging countries No.30-40th,(UNDP,and World bank,World develpment report,Human development report,Rankings)
but the free media and press ranking, like China averge,No.58 among 102 nations (Data Available,Freedom house.com),be in the group of some poorest african nations still in civil war,
Should I stay in Japan working as an 2nd class citizen or back to Shanghai in face of the tragedies made by some Chinese officials?
Please respect the rules of the game, esp.,some tribe leaders who made a fortune in power or in business.

I have been following this page for quite some time. I hope listeners realize that one of Brian's counterparts, Frank Hossack, has been trying to continue to build a relationship with Chinese radio with his partner, Gucki Zuerner, over the past four years. I'd encourage you all to continue to support Brian's quest, and to support what we have now in China. Cha Cha Radio has embellished upon Hello From Britain's quest, and has continuously delivered programs to Nanjing, Anhui, Hangzhou and Hunan. Contact them through www.chacharadio.com

Hi,Brian :) How are you? This is Jason here, I used to be a loyal audience of HFB when I was in college in Shanghai, It SO different than most of the other radio programs in China that I was deeply attracted by it at the first time I tuned in! Ever since then listening to your show became my routine. You know,it's such a pleasure to lay down in the bed, turn on the radio, enjoy your HFB and relax. And I always thought the program is not long enough. Hello from Britain has become one of my most wonderful memories of Shanghai City and guess what, I came to Britain after my graduation! Now I can listen to British radios every day but I still miss HFB, I miss the time when HFB is with me. Can't believe that they shut down such a beloved program, nowonder it disappeared in 2001(I thought it was just a short break, but it never came back). Until today I happend to be brought to this website do I realize what happened to HFB. I am truely sorry about that and do hope HFB will come back to Shanghai some day. At last, hope you will recover soon and Good Luck to you and all the HFB people!
Jason

wrote a lot in the vacation. here i am back. juz reviewed the words then...found in a sudden that months hav escaped n moods really vary. heading for the new direction in the new term. wanna b absorbed in a certain thing. not so restricted by the gpa in the uni now. feel it more important to read more learn more n experience more. harvested a lot this year. n feel myself heading for a new direction with enough confidence n patience. sort f attracted by the subject i major in, feel so lucky. n lab is not so boring as other ppl feel. kinda fun if u really like the subject. wanna discover more in the field i unkown. science z really different n challenging. feel so great finding myself totally ignorant n ready to learn in a whole new world.
everything will b over juz like the shift f the 4 seasons. tiz word z to everybd. n hope for the best for the studio. know u can c the words f every guest here. n with so many audience unwilling to let it pass by great memory f ur program, i wish u still hav the passion n patience till the setting z ready n right for the return f the program. best wishes for the 2 of ur. longing for the responce-of-the-guestbuk from the studio via broadcast~~as u used to do.
mayb it's true to let bygones be bygones but i shall never forget.

Hi all. have read through the guest book, there are few words i have to say here.
揘ote from Brian..... 揘o War I wonder if you really understand the situation Steel Lu.....after all in China it is YOU who also live with a government that you did not choose and cannot oppose. Do you know Brian, how many people from how many nations opposed the war? It is tough that Chinese government drove you out of business, however, there is no call to give up your humanity here. U.S. and U.K. governments are powerful and resourceful enough to find someone to murder Sadam, however, they chose to let people suffer. Millions of dollars are spent on magnificent 揻ireworks show.
揑 repeat that the Iraqi people and the World will be better off when the EVIL Sadam Hussein is dead.
揑s he really dead? How can you be sure? Is war the only way to deal with it? Do you think U.S. and U.K. governments will help Iraqi people rebuild their home for free? Do you think us govt will let Iraqi people live their own happy life after the war? Violence will only lead to hatred and betrayal, do you really know the situation or just speak emotionally.
There are many ways to go forward, revenge and violence should be deployed carefully. Besides, for Chinese government, not all the decision they made are wrong, it抯 not perfect, but making progress slowly. Comparing to years ago, the government now is a lot better. You might have your chances in the future. The reason people (including me) like you and your program is that your style of presenting the program is amusing and relaxing. We feel that you are a positive person and have good expectations in life. Those people in the Shanghai Dong Fang Radio Station once highly praised your contribution to the local industry in another radio show. One person let you down doesn抰 mean all will do the same. Besides, one person抯 taste differs from another. Don抰 give up your good personality and perspectives just because the frustration you suffer now.
You were giving people joy, now you are giving people hatred.
Why don抰 you Brian, give people motivation instead, make yourself a model, motivated and encouraged, start things over after the free fall in your life? Why don抰 you prove to people that you are an excellent foreign friend to shanghai audients, show them that you love them as much as they love you?
For the cancellation of your program, the reason stated was that Maggie doesn抰 speak good mandarin. Can she be the advocator of the Chinese culture, pay some effort to improve that? There is never too late to learn and to improve oneself. I speak English in four different accents fluently and I wouldn抰 mind if need to pick a few more when in other countries. Can Maggie do the same? At least, Chinese is her mother tongue, it shouldn抰 be as hard as I learn English as a second language.
In the other hand, do business in other country is hard. I can remember how many times I got frustrated because of UK government抯 policies towards foreigners (esp. citizens of People抯 Republic of China), do you think I should tell Brits that their government is rubbish?
Please stay positive and if failed, try, try and try again.
Anyways, hope to hear good new from you soon.
Kev

但愿我们的政府:“by the people, for the people”。 S

Brian,

NO WAR!
STEEL LU
JINAN, CHINA - Wednesday, March 26, 2003 at 13:27:08 (GMT)
Note from Brian..... "No War" I wonder if you really understand the situation Steel Lu..... after all in China it is YOU who also live with a government that you did not choose and cannot oppose. In China you also have a state controlled media that simply does NOT tell the TRUTH. Sadam Hussein is without doubt an evil man and the world and the people of his country will be better without him. Use your OWN brain Steel Lu and THINK FOR YOURSELF. Yes there are lies on ALL sides in this sad situation but form your opinions and thoughts by listening to ALL sides. Do NOT simply accept what your media or any media tell you.... think for yourself. The truth..... in MY opinion is that there is never a totally RIGHT or totally WRONG situation... however... I repeat that the Iraqi people and the World will be better off when the EVIL Sadam Hussein is dead.

Hi, Brian, this time I type the lyrics of "Hero", hope you can get the power from it.
There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of what you are
There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
Will melt away
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
It's a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold
You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt
Will disappear
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone
Tear them away
Hold on
There will be tomorrow
In time
You'll find the way
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you

It is a long time since the last time I came here, about half a year ago.I can't imagine this time I enterd the site, what i saw was such a bad news. How is Brian now?Did he had a successful operation?I hope so and I hope everything could just going on well.Although i haven't got that chance to hear your voice for over 2 years,I still remember Maggie's voice and Brian's humor. It accompanyied me through my high school life and led me go into the stage of world music.I'm so greatful for you,Maggie and Brian.Wish you all the best and Brian can recover as soon as possible.

chanced upon ur programme in junior 3 which was 4 years ago. addicted to it since.. now in 2grade in the uni. lost in touch whith u for such a longtime.. knew u had a website @that time but didn hav an access to the internet then. just suddenly remember to search for u. the hfb has been out f reach for me for such a long time that i cannot imagine viewing this page n recalling the good old days. how i luv maggie's voice n bryan's humor n the pussy cat out there n the excellent music u present~~~~ any chance that u return to us???? in my senior high school i lead a pilgrim-like life...allow me 2say it that way...libraries, toefle course n supplementary courses n science competitions in schools in other parts f the city(always requires a long bus-shuttle each weekend. sometimes i spend a whole day out there. feel so much accompanied having ur programme with me,esp in rainy days in winter. no longer lonely. no longer frustrated. feel so confident while life shows no aims for me. parents were out of work one aft the other that year. u know it was common in shanghai around1998. rarely stay @home @that time, usu go to a local library n stay in dorm @school. feel such loneliness and aimless for the future.), was apart from my best friend n had a new deskmate(she was so different from me , a true music fan prefering oasis n other unfamiliar western bands, not so sensitive, prudent n rational as i do. i didn imagine becoming a friend i mean true friend then. but i did. to my surprise in the early times. she's ur odience as well. i got to know her better n got to understand her. n had learned to understand n appreciate ppl different since. it was she who told me'old b4 i die' when i nearly told her i attempted suicide 2ice.) ..n so much other things to recall...) i'll continue my story though. well time really flies.. in the university. then i lost in touch with u in senior3 when most f us prepare for the college-entrance exam. n there're also a lot f people preparing to study abroad as well... didn go to the library so often cos the people i got aquainted with all went to the college. no need for them to share the local library. without the warmth from the library n new music to my taste, i juz feel a bit lost n uncomfortable n life seems quite a blank in the memory, i mean nothing in particular to indulge in. was quite a dull life blocked from out side. now i managed to enter the university i longed4 n the major i pursued--in fudan university of biology major. but i don feel any happier coz the circumtances r different from what i expected. too different n disappointing. i thought i can manage to learn as i can n adjust. but i was wrong. too many things to get myself prepared for @ our age. feel i am not made for scientific work. tried to work harder but surrendered. feel the competition n other pressure. think i should choose my job from other respect... well call me an escaper. juz wanna chose the job i hav a passion for. far from the topic now.. anyway, really think too much in the university n suddenly opposed to such vast new ideas n information that the ideology i owned 2yrs ago seems so limited n fragile.bit absurd.hav got some friends in the university, but few...though i do hav some so-called friends. feel it harder to keep real friend when we get elder.. also met someone who shared the same interest. but we parted b4 becoming bf n gf although we tried. starting to hurt each other n get dumb when we get 2gether. sounds naive ah? =) he shares the same age n he began listening to hfb even earlier. quite a unique person and 2gether with him i can recall many wonderful moments in the childhood n teenage that've been sleeping for yrs hiden in my memory. @the moment, i often feel the desire to be addicted to sth. films, music, net, fictions. but hopelessly i'm also addicted to sleepless nights n i'm writing here 5o'clock in the morning. don't listen much 2real music since senior3.. juz some songs in chinese one easily gets addited to n bored with.missed a lot nice hits in english i guess. okay, let it be. only some old songs like wonderwall n champagne supernova etc..n craig david's songs that i got 2 know in ur programme. can still recall the ecstasy u bring me when u first introduce 2me his 7days. thinking to much, i sometimes feel pludged in a state of hopelessness. with such a mind full f conflict that i repeatedly doubt the value i own n the life i'm leading. feel i cannot live without art music n other imagination-provoking elements. life seems absurd otherwise. feel i'm juz a small potato when i grow up. but hate to realize that i gonna be more n more away from the neverneverland....wanna escape for a while b4 that moment comes out.. maybe i chose right.. i wont regret. with ur music life seems easier.how i wish to gather the warmth f the past! or create miracles with the courage i once possess.. will write to u tiz way often. wondering whether i can review the old broadcasts via net.. anyway.so much. seems i wrote enough to block the guestbuk-page. =)) untill next conjestion~~~ urs. brenda

It is my mail sorting that make me have the chance again to log in HFB web after a long time of its stop in Shanghai.
For me ( also a lot fans of HFB & Nescafe Music Time ), your programme is not only a radio broadcasting , it represents an unreverse memory of our young life ,which belonged to all of us (Brian&Maggie ,you & me) ,and did not
come back again despite of many many fans' yelling & crying.
Though thinking of these will let me feel so sad once more ,
it can never stop me keeping all my happy past in my mind.
At the last moment of 2002 , I just want to say :

DEAR BRIAN:
I AM VERY SORRY TO HEAR THIS BAD NEWS ABOUT YOU LONG AFTER I LOGGED ON TO YOUR HFB LAST TIME. I COME FROM HANGZHOU A CITY NEAR SHANGHAI. I USED TO BE VERY PROUD THAT THIS EXTREMELY EXCELLENT BILINGUAL PROGRAM WAS STILL ON AIR WHILE HFB HAD BEEN BANNED FOR SOME UNKNOWN REASON. BUT ONE DAY EARLIER THIS YEAR(I CAN NOT REMEMBER THE SPECIFIC DATE),TUNING IN TO THE FAMILIAR FREQUENCY I FOUND I COULD NOT HEAR YOUR ENCOURAGING AND ATTACTIVE VOICE LATER ON LIKE MY FRIENDS IN SHANGHAI. THAT'S....THAT'S REALLY UNBELIEVABLE. SURELY YOU MUST UNDERSTAND HOW I FELT THEN. IT SEEMS THAT I LOST ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS IN MY LIFE WHO I PROMISED TO LOVE FOREVER. EVER SINCE, I SCARCELY TURN ON MY RADIO,THIS "MUSIC BOX" IS NEVER LOVELY AGAIN.
I REVIEWED THE INFORMATION ABOUT YOU AND YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS ON THE SITE AND I AM VEYR GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE DONE HELPING BUILD A 2-WAY COMMUNICATION BETWEEN CHINA AND OUTSIDE ESPECIALLY THE FRIENDLY SCOTTISH. NEW YEAR COMING NEAR, I WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY NEW YEAR AND QUICK RECOVERY. I HOPE ONE DAY YOU COULD COME BACK TO CHINA, COME BACK TO HANGZHOU, COME BACK TO BRING US MORE HAPPY TIME. CROSS MY HANDS FOR YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU.
IF NEEDED, I CAN DO WHATEVER YOU NEED ME TO. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO WRITE TO ME.

Re broadcasting on the internet. The audience would be TINY and it is not worth it. Who would PAY? An advertiser wants a MASS audience and not a tiny one. Techically it would be interesting but practically it would be a waste of time.

I saw an ad of DHL in street one day, and it made me miss Hello from Britain. I like the programme very much, so i see the cite again.
I read Brian's comments, and it's really hard to accept some of your views. I think you can't call Chinese radio workers idiots. I remembered once you praise shanghai dongfang radio station. Although you say you love the ordinary people, but I think the one you call idiots are ordinary people too. And your comments are more than criticism, it's like insult. I don't know much about radio, but i do feel your words are too strong.
Your programme is good, but i don't think it's much better than all Chinese programmes. I like Hello from Britain only because of its music. I will like it too if it's with a different style but still good songs. I listen many chinese radio programmes too, and many is very good to me.

Thank you for your comment. I still feel very good about the AUDIENCE of ORDINARY people who listened to our programmes throughout China. It is indeed a tragedy for ordinary Chinese people that the government is totalitarian and that there is so much selfish greed amongst certain people in China too. One day this will change. Thanks again. Brian
Hi! I'm a Chinese and I'm in london now. I'm looking for Joy FM which is a music program of CRI I heard very often when I was in my university. And I found this site and this program and your story. I can feel that the audience of your program have the same feeling that I have for JoyFM. You gave them happiness and attractive time. And I totally agree with what you said in English about things in China. You are not the first one who was unfairly hurt. I must say that things in China are not the same as what happened in london. And as you said it, many things are controlled. Just before I came here, net bars in Beijing were closed saying that it was useful to avoid the fire accidents. It is ridiculous. So why don't close all the shops and clear all the woods to avoid the fire accidents. My experience in China was also very unpleasant.
But, you did give people happiness. you should feel peaceful in your mind, since many people will be thinking about your program and your voice often in their lives.
Thank you!

HFB,We love you for ever.

Maggie&Brian,I miss you so much, don't leave alone!
